Ford Tallies Potential Losses - Wall Street Journal

November 18th, 2008 | by admin | Open Question: My boss says he will fire me if I buy the same car as him, what should I do?
I work for a management information systems company, we provide IT services and web design. I work in the IT office, it’s just my boss and I here.
He recently purchased a Chrysler Crossfire, and in the three months he’s had it for, he’s only brought it to work three times, and hardly ever uses it (he’s too busy working 70 hr weeks).
I like the car a lot, and I’m in the market for a car. I came across a very nicely priced Crossfire, and at first didn’t think I would get it, but the more I checked it out, the more it appealed to me.
This week I told him that I was thinking of getting it, and he boldly told me that if I got it, he would fire me. I didn’t think he was serious, but apparently he is.
I tried to explain to him that he hardly ever uses it, and he doesn’t even live in the city we work in. He lives across the border 40-50 mins. away. I even told him that I wouldn’t bring it to work, but he didn’t wanna hear it, and said that I would be terminated immediately if I got it.
I was really upset, because I had really fallen for the car, and even got called last nite by the dealership saying that the car is mine if I want it.
I don’t think it’s fair. The reason I believe he feels this way is because he doesn’t want his worker that he pays poorly to have the same car as him, as if his car feels less valuable to him if someone like me also has one. Let me add as well that we don’t even park in the same parking lot. He has a parking space in front of the office, while I have to walk a block to the back of the office to park.
I don’t think I want to stay working here for long after this, but I also realize how hard it is to find a job, especially in my area (a valley made up of small cities) and finding a new job would take me months. But I also don’t want this deal on this car to slip through my hands.
What should I do?
He would probably find out sooner or later that I got it, and it just sucks too that I wouldn’t be able to take it to work. I should be able to drive it wherever I want. Thanks for the replies, keep ‘em coming.
