Open Question: Hot rodders/engine builders - how much would you pay?
How much would you pay for a set of hemi heads for a small-block Chevy? This would be for a complete kit, with two aluminum heads with large valves (BBC valves), free-flowing ports, with the necessary hardware like the rocker shaft assemblies, custom pistons, valve covers, an intake manifold with a bolt-on top for different carb and/or blower setups, and a set of block-hugger headers. An egine with these heads will look like an early Hemi, and make plenty of power, but be based on the very common small block Chevy.
A comparable kit for the big block Chevy from Arias sells for $12,000, but then again, you almost never see one of them, since you can buy a real Chrysler for just a couple thousand more.
So, what would be a good price for this kit? A set of aluminum wedge-style heads from Dart or Edelbrock would be at least $2500 with rocker arms, valve covers and pistons, and these are original-design heads. Would $5000 for the kit be a reasonable price? What about $6000?
One last question - do you think that a market exists for a 409-style (staggered valve) lookalike head for the SBC?
Thanks for all of your input.
(For the doubters, I am a mechanical engineer, very familiar with the hemi design, and I know the challenges that will be faced in designing an SBC version. So, please, just stick to the question.)
